I am offically leaving to go back to the USA tomorrow morning. I will be going to the Cleveland Clinic on Monday the 29th, and hopefully this will lead me back to full health once again. Since March 1st, when I had my first surgery, so many people have helped me through these tough times.

I am in good spirits and have plenty of hope because of this.

So many people have helped that I don't even know so for those of you who have remained anonymous...thank you.

There are many also that need to be acknowledged: Paul Hussey  (Global Village Center), Kim Mi-Ju (Joong Ang Daily), The students at Suwon Foreign Language High School, Alexandria, Phillies, HBC, VFW, Seoul Players, Bundang Social Club, Aussie Bar, Berlin, Indigo/Orange Tree, Stompers, Eden, Big Rock, Dr. John Linton & Severance Hospital...if I have forgetten anyone I apologize.

I also have to pay my respects to all my friends, old and new, that visited in the hospital and brought me food and entertainment. Those who spent time organizing the different events and fundraising efforts.

Leaving Korea like this is very difficult, but I realize that it is the only necessary option for me right now. Once again you have all helped so much and I can never truly express my gratitude, or maybe I am now...I don't know. I hope that you all continue to enjoy your time in Korea and I hope in time maybe I'll see many of you here again at some point because I am not getting to leave on my own terms. I will miss you all, but I will update this sight on my recovery process.

Russians Arrested for Dealing Marijuana in Busan

Immigration crackdown ends (or “When the cat’s away, the mice will play”)

Police have arrested 8,035 violators of the Immigration Law during a 70-day crackdown started April 1. They have detained 148 and booked 7,887 without physical detention, the National Police Agency said Monday.

Chinese nationals made up the largest portion of the foreigners arrested, totaling 2,744. The most common offence was illegal marriage to obtain Korean citizenship, which made up 45 percent of the total cases.

Other major illegal activities include document forgery for visa application, which accounted for 14.5 percent. Unqualified native English and Chinese-speakers made up 8.3 percent. Most of them entered Korea on tourism or student visas, which do not allow them to work here.

“Due to the English education fever here, a lot of foreigners, especially from English-speaking countries, are often found working illegally here without the proper visa,” a police official said.

How Not to Deal With a Problem

On the 16th the Suncheon Police Department in Jeollanam-do applied for an arrest warrant for a 42-year old Mr. Jeong on suspicion of going to a police station and shouting at a female police officer whom he held a grudge against for arresting him. He did this while wearing only his underwear.

According to police, at approximately 3:10 PM on the 15th Mr. Jeong went to the south entrance of the station and threatened the officer, A, saying, “I was in prison because of you. I’m going to kill you,” for 90 minutes while wearing only underwear.

In July of last year Mr. Jeong was arrested for doing the same while drunk and naked, and was recently released from prison.

I managed to discover that it is only E-2 and E-6 visas that require the test. When I asked why this was the case, he informed me that it was to protect the children. He then said that I could leave the country if I wanted or phone my embassy.

After Mr. Choi hung up on me, I thought some more about the fairness of the rule. The E-6 visa is for entertainers, not teachers. I don’t understand the similarities that would group both the E-2 and E-6 visas together. Porn… It’s Bad for You

Ye Olde Chosun warns of the horrors of porn addiction:

Pornography addiction was once seen as a problem for adolescents, and it was only cyber nannies aimed at the young that screened out “adult” content. The sites also usually require customers to prove their age. But is porn just a danger to children? Experts say no.

One of the worst aspects of porn addiction is that it can discourage the normal sexual relationship between couples. Prof. Kim Sung of Korea Bible University, a counselor at the Center for Internet Addiction Prevention and Counseling, said, “The porn addiction cycle gets shorter and shorter as addicts look for ever stronger thrills. Inevitably they become numb in normal relationships.”

There are physical problems associated with porn addiction, too:

Porn addiction can also damage your health. For many it is difficult to watch porn in the daytime when other family members are around, so people usually watch it in a dark room late at night, and as a result suffer from lack of sleep, fatigue and deteriorating eyesight.

Which is why your Uncle Marmot says you should always watch your porn in a well-lit room.

If addiction becomes serious and leads to paraphilias like voyeurism and exhibitionism, it can result in legal punishment or require psychiatric treatment. It also makes it difficult for the addict to live a normal social life at school or work. The images linger in the mind and often distract addicts from concentrating on work. They sometimes leave the office to go to adult-only cyber cafés, and some serious addicts turn to sexual violence in trying to imitate what they have seen.

Oh my!

Luckily, there is a cure — straight out of “A Clockwork Orange”:

Like many other addictions, porn addiction is not easy to cure. The most widely accepted treatment is telephone counseling, often accompanied by cognitive behavioral therapy. For example, doctors create an unpleasant atmosphere around the experience, such as making the patients smell garbage or giving them mild electric shocks while watching porn. This is intended to program their brains to remember watching porn as a negative experience. Diverting the patients’ attention to other things such as sports and music also helps.

How the concept of “nunchi” can affect the online community.

The example in class was about a blog hosted on Korean service providers sites like Naver or Cyworld. On these sites, people can post their opinions on topics in publicly hosted blogs. The question was about Korean websites policies to remove posts when someone in the comments complain about how the comment was insulting, or hurt their feelings in some way.

As a long time blogger, I reacted with shock to discovering this. “Naver pulls the blog post if you complain in the comments? Seriously?”

Several students said that they thought this was a good idea. “If someone says something that hurts me, I can get it removed. People can’t say bad things I don’t like, so that’s good.”

· You will be expected to ditch all opinions that may be construed as individual or offensive to the arms dealers and/or corporate fanatics you are tutoring;

· To have any chance of professional progress, you will be expected to fork out large sums of your hard-earned salary on cash cow qualifications that few seem to pass first time;

· You will escape to foreign climes only to find that, while, if you’re lucky, you’re marginally better off financially, the job is exactly the same, only with all the complications that come from living abroad;

· Every time you take a day off sick, an effigy of you will be burned by both the teacher who had to replace you and/or the Director of Studies/school owner, who will feel vindicated in their belief that you are a recovering alcoholic who has plunged from the wagon;

· You will develop a passion for overwhelmingly desirable and impossibly complicated foreigners, and pine away into an emotional sack thing when they inevitably leave you for somebody real;

· You will spend your days feeling like a hamster on a wheel. A hamster on a wheel of a heavy goods vehicle.
