There are so many elements I want to geek out on. The time travel plot was a big healthy “fuck you” to the usual time travel stories where things are put back into place or put better in the end. In the Trek universe, they have a few precedents for the alternate timeline angle, particularly the episode from TOS with evil Kirk and Spock and the seventh season TNG episode where there were multiple Worf timelines, one of which had him as captain of the Enterprise.

Given that this has the flavor of J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelhof, I wonder what this may imply for “Lost” and its debate on time travel. We can have alternate timelines independent of paradoxes, yet destiny can still repeat some motifs (even in the alternate timeline, the same crew somehow gets together).

Another great F.U. moment was the Spock/Uhura relationship, given that there was that famous competition between Nimoy and Shatner in the ’60s to score the first TV interracial kiss, where Shatner got the glory. In this one, it shows that Spock got her first.

My only disappointment with the movie was the music. After seeing the range of music that can work with sci-fi through “Battlestar,” I wanted something more varied than the worn out giant space opera orchestral march. Imagine if some ethnic drums and eerie vocals were in certain parts a la BSG. I think it was a missed opportunity.

I also like the send off for Pike, rather than turning into a vegetable the way he did in TOS.

I saw the movie today and really loved it! The time travel theme worked… OK… I was afraid paradoxes would be created (a la Heroes series), but it seems like they went the multiverse venue (a new timeline was created… which I suppose one could attribute to this being in an alternate universe).

I really loved the opening scene and was a little bit surprised at how emotional I got when daddy died. It was great!

That said.. The CGV screening room here in Daegu was packed (all seats taken)!
