May I suggest a new name for the podcast…..”I hate korea podcast” The content of most of your podcasts have been nothing but “things to make fun about korea”

You made a choice to live there and from what I can see, you and your other hosts have made a fair amount of money at the expense of Korean parents who shell out a ton of money to pay for these useless English schools. Honestly, you folks come across as ingrates.

Turner: would you have listened to a “Here’s another thing to love about Korea!” podcast? Cheerleading gets a bit bland after a while.

Turner obviously hasn’t been to Dave’s… Although, I must admit that I have noticed that a lot of my favorite Korean blogs/podcasts have seemed a little more negative than usual.

I will say it again– I love living in Korea almost as much as I love complaining. In the US, I spend an equal amount of time going on about the white trash/ rednecks that I come across in my day. I’m equal opportunity.

Turner, people tend to make fun of whatever is around them and whatever city they live in. Ever hear the locals in your city rave about the quality of your city’s drivers, the efficiency of your local public services, the approachability of your women, the logic of public signage, the quality of the male dating pool, the top notch parenting skills on display at the local grocery store, the reasonable approach your unions take, the value you’re getting at the fare box when you take public transit, the attentiveness of pedestrians, the great music local pop celebs are cranking out, etc.?

Life in Korea is not a walk in the park and can be a challenge. That’s not to say it doesn’t have its rewards. As we used to note on Seoul Survivors the take away is:

a) here’s this weeks crop ‘o’ challenges

b) notice we’re laughing? that’s the best way to deal with challenges

c) if you’re planning to come to korea, we’re not going to blow sunshine up your butt and claim it’s the land of the morning calm and korea sparkling and a land of smile princesses.

A Korean friend noted to me whenever she overheard two foreigners talking on the subway, they were invariably complaining about Korea. In your local city, some kid tosses his trash on the ground instead of the trash can right behind him, you mention it to your coworker, laugh, and move on. Some driver cuts you off when you’re walking with the green, you mention it to your friend. We have ways of valving this stuff. It’s not quite the same in Korea, however. You tend to keep a lot of this bottled up. And the once weekly chance you get to talk in uninhibited English with your whitey pal, you just love to valve.

Drunk korean men may well want to fight you in a donut shop because you’re white. Cab drivers will tell you you’re fat. Old Korean men will follow you and your GF around as you walk down the street. White women will be considered hookers first. Schools won’t tell you about schedule changes until the morning of. Immigration will change the rules on the fly. Your earnest desire to give parents and students value for their money will be blocked by greedy hagwon owners. Kids will be kids. Your school, full of young children, will be a rather noticeable fire trap. All this and more will happen to you in Korea. People shouldn’t know?

I defy you, however, to find one Seoul Podcast host or guest who wouldn’t die to save his/her students if that school went up in flames, who doesn’t on a weekly basis go home with his/her head hung low because the kids just weren’t getting it and felt like the parents weren’t getting value for their money, who doesn’t give up a seat for an elderly passenger a lot quicker than a local, who doesn’t actually take the time to give free english lessons….

Evil Jennifer is correct in that pink really doesn’t have the same connotations in traditional Korean culture as in Western culture. The two cultures coexist and do not necessarily conflict even in close proximity. A good example is traditional Korean mourning clothing; it is white. In Western style funeral, however, people will wear black. So, is white or black the mourning color in Korea? Answer? It depends.

I wasn’t challenging Korean traditional styles, but pink is now considered a feminine color. I asked Eun Jeong about it this past weekend, and she said that was true. Pink is now a girl’s color in Korea. And if Eun Jeong says it, it has to be true.

I used to feel like Turner, and still skip ahead when the criticising gets too much. But I also understand what Good Jen has argued manys times (and again now). Since I am not in Korea, I am looking for a “life in Korea” kind of thing from my podcasts and blogs. Seoul Survivors did that well, and Seoul Podcast has its ups and downs, but I listen.

Also, Turner, if you wonder about Joe, read his Food Journal and Adventures blog. He and “A Geek in Korea” got it spot on for the “life in Korea” stories I am looking for.

echem . . .actually, I would not do anything for my students. Not only that, I never go home worrying about what they have or have not learned from me. I never do this because I am NOT a teacher here. Nice thought, and I’m sure it’s true *of* teachers, but let’s please not fall into the trap of assuming that’s what everybody is up to. No Korean parents’ finances have been harmed in the making of this podcast.
Eun-jeong can try and wrestle the pink shirts away from all those metrosexual flowerboys. She’s a fighter, but I think they’ll hold onto those floral patters with a tenacity that proves that they still have balls of steel underneath that tailored pantsuit. The fuchsia tie is just there to point out where they’re located . . .

I am not saying that you should kiss korea’s ass. If you don’t like something….then, by all means, say it. But your sarcasm and pure negativity is draining and annoying. I think there is a fine line between being critical and a whinny bitch. All I am saying is that most of the time, u all come across as the latter.

Turner, you’re free to get off your butt and make your own show. No one’s forcing the show on you. In fact, you have to go out and seek it and download it to listen to it. Trying to do what we do each week is a lot more constructive than being a whiney bitch about other people being “whinny bitches.”

Besides, I’m already called a Korean apologist in other places, so this balances things out.
